Application Notes
The vinegar fly, or fruit fly, is an excellent animal model for studying the underlying mechanisms of human disease. In preparation for use in research studies, fruit fly larvae must eat and grow continuously over a four-day period before hatching. In this app note, we describe the time-consuming and labor-intensive process of preparing vessels with fly food and how to avoid it using a fully automated system.
In recent years, kratom has become an increasingly popular recreational drug around the world; consequently, this increase in popularity is matched by increasing concern over its potential to worsen the current opioid epidemic. As a result, further studies of kratom and its constituent compounds are necessary to better understand the mechanisms of action of these compounds and to evaluate possible therapeutic benefits of mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine, present in kratom. CPC is recognized as the preferred technology for the purification of high quality Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) for the pharmaceutical and food supplement markets. The objective of this app note was to test the high selectivity of CPC and assess its capability to purify a set of key compounds (THC, CBD, CBN and CBG) and enrich several minor cannabinoids (CBDV, CBCV and CBC).
Ginger is widely known for its use in flavoring foods and beverages, but it is also commonly used for medicinal, perfumery, and esthetic purposes. This app note shows how CPC can produce a high-quality standard of [6]-gingerol without the use of silica-based chromatography methods, such as FLASH and prep HPLC.
Accurately quantify THC and metabolites for forensic purposes
Fermentation allows for the conversion of organic materials into relatively simple substances by using micro-organisms such as bacteria, Streptomyces, filamentous fungi, or yeast. In this app note, we demonstrate the added value of CPC at achieving an efficient separation from a fermentation broth in one step.
Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by fungi that are harmful to humans and animals. Patulin, found in rotting apples, is a compound that is regulated in many countries. Food safety testing for patulin is crucial to limit exposure; however, many sample cleanup methods do not remove closely related compounds, which can lead to false positive results.
Vanillin is the major component of natural vanilla, which is one of the most widely used flavoring materials worldwide. In this app note, an ethanolic crude extract of vanilla is used to show the capacity of the PLC 2050 system to work with different types of chromatographic columns.
As the drug resistance of malaria parasites increases, the development of innovative and effective antimalaria drugs is of high importance. In this app note, we describe how natural products provide a vast field of new lead structures that are effective in fighting the disease.
In this study, functional RNA was quantitated by RT-qPCR using the GoTaq® Probe 1-Step RT-qPCR System after two different extraction methods. To enhance the pipetting accuracy and consistency, PIPETMAX was used to reduce pipetting errors inherent in manual methods.
