Sustainability

Corporate Responsibility

Gilson has been around for 75 years and counting, and sustainability is in our genes. Our involvement in protecting the environment extends to our financial resources, operations, employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities we live and work in daily.

From carefully designing our products to be greener, to protecting our environment through small changes in our daily work, you can be sure that sustainability is at the core of what we do. We also maintain a number of initiatives that help us to give back to the amazing scientists in the field and support access to science for all.

EcoVadis Award

Gilson’s plastic Center of Excellence is ISO 14001 accredited, which means we meet the highest standards in the enhancement of environmental performance, compliance obligations, and achievement of environmental objectives. Our sustainability initiative at this location is to produce plastic in a more efficient and environmentally conscious way. Our plastic manufacturing center has also been awarded the silver medal from EcoVadis, an independent company that evaluates corporate social responsibility (CSR) compliance according to four requirements:

  • Environmental Responsibility
  • Social Laws
  • Business Ethics
  • Supply Chain Management

In addition to our initiatives at Gilson Plastics, our Gilson manual liquid handling site in Villiers-le-bel, France, was awarded a Bronze EcoVadis rating for additional sustainability practices. These two sites are the first steps toward future accreditation for our locations around the globe.

Built to Last and Avoid Waste

We are not designing products with the end in mind: all our products are designed for durability and extended life. 40-year-old PIPETMAN® pipettes as well as decades old liquid handlers and chromatography systems are still in use in some laboratories today. The quality of our products stands the test of time, but we also make sure our systems can be repurposed and are not locked into one application. They are adaptable to new challenges, thanks to our extensive catalog of accessories. It’s been in our DNA for over 75 years to build things that last and to avoid waste and unnecessary purchases. This is a pragmatic basic step and we’re just getting started!

Greener Technologies

Designed as a silica free technology, our VERITY® CPC systems purify natural compounds using only solvents that can be recycled. Additionally, they don’t require the use of stationary phases such as silica gel that require frequent washing. Look to centrifugal partition chromatography for a “greener” way to purify.

Gilson has also taken several initiatives to minimize the impact of tip-packaging waste and has notably designed an original reload system (TOWERPACK™) which uses 70% less plastic than racks. Plastic parts and cardboard packaging are marked with the recycling logo indicating that they can be recycled.

Giving Back to Support Science

Science improves the quality of life. We make a meaningful impact by helping scientists advance the pace of their discovery and we foster opportunities for employees to feel more engaged by giving back to their communities. Each year we come together on a variety of causes the company and our employees care about and donate to support advances in research, including:

  • Medical research for treatments and cures for the world’s most prevalent diseases
  • Scientific education at all levels
  • Global, equitable access to scientific tools and lab equipment
  • Local, employee-led initiatives to improve our communities

We also give back to our scientific communities by refurbishing our products and making donations to educational programs in our communities.
